One fatality reported following a devastating tornado that has flattened Barnsdall, Oklahoma, leaving behind scenes of utter devastation.
Residents in communities throughout the central U.S. are once again facing the aftermath of severe weather and tornadoes that swept across the region from Monday night into Tuesday morning. At least one person has been reported dead, and extensive damage has been inflicted on a city north of Tulsa in Oklahoma.BARNSDALL, Okla. – A devastating tornado has claimed one life and caused widespread destruction in a small town northeast of Oklahoma City on Monday evening.
The National Weather Service confirmed that Barnsdall, a community of approximately 1,000 residents located about 40 minutes north of Tulsa, was virtually flattened shortly after 9:30 p.m. A storm survey team indicated damage consistent with at least an EF-4 strength tornado on the Enhanced Fujita Scale. This marks the second tornado to strike the town in the span of five weeks.
"It just hit all of a sudden," described Joy King, who recounted feeling pressure in her ears before hearing a deafening noise. The storm cellar door she sought refuge in was ripped open, and debris filled the air. "I even had it latched to a bolt in the floor, and it just ripped it off."
King, along with her small dog, sheltered in a corner for about 30 minutes. Although she contemplated leaving, her husband warned her of another incoming cell, prompting her to remain in place.
"We're alive," she exclaimed. "Thank God, we're alive."
Barnsdall Mayor Johnny Kelley reported one fatality and up to eight injuries in the town. The Tulsa Fire Department initiated a daylight search for one, possibly two, missing individuals. Fortunately, heightened weather awareness helped mitigate further casualties, according to the mayor.
Kelley noted that the town's electrical system suffered severe damage, and the main water distribution line was destroyed.
Governor Kevin Stitt of Oklahoma announced plans to visit Barnsdall on Tuesday afternoon, directing resources to support recovery efforts.
"Hold them in your prayers," he urged.
A Tornado Emergency, the most severe tornado alert, was issued for Osage County in Oklahoma as the storm approached. The NWS warned of a "large and destructive tornado" advancing toward Barnsdall, causing catastrophic damage.
