Reggie Bush reclaims Heisman Trophy 14 years after relinquishing it.
Reggie Bush has reclaimed his 2005 Heisman Trophy, as the Heisman Trust declared the formal "reinstatement" of the award to Bush in light of what it terms "significant changes in the college football landscape."This decision follows Bush's surrender of the Heisman Trophy in 2010, amidst severe NCAA penalties imposed on USC, including findings of Bush receiving impermissible benefits during his tenure with the Trojans from 2003 to 2005.
In its announcement on Wednesday, the Heisman Trust disclosed the return of the Heisman Trophy to Bush and a replica to USC. Moreover, Bush will once again be included in all future Heisman Trophy ceremonies, starting from the 2024 season.
Expressing his sentiments, Bush stated to ESPN, "Personally, I'm thrilled to reunite with my fellow Heisman winners and be a part of the storied legacy of the Heisman Trophy, and I'm honored to return to the Heisman family." He further expressed eagerness to collaborate with the Heisman Trust to promote its values and objectives.
Bush was presented with his Heisman Trophy during a scheduled summit meeting of the Trust on Wednesday morning near Jacksonville, Florida. Tim Henning, associate director of the Heisman Trust, described an atmosphere of celebration, with approximately 15 Heisman winners present at the gathering.
"The other winners were all very excited to see him," Henning remarked.
The decision to reinstate the Heisman Trophy was reached through a deliberative process by the Heisman Trust, reflecting the significant transformations in college athletics in recent years. The Trust highlighted the evolution of rules permitting student-athlete compensation, which has become widely accepted and entrenched in collegiate sports.
"We are thrilled to welcome Reggie Bush back to the Heisman family in recognition of his collegiate accomplishments," stated Michael Comerford, president of The Heisman Trophy Trust. "We considered the enormous changes in college athletics over the last several years in deciding that now is the right time to reinstate the trophy for Reggie. We are so happy to welcome him back."
With the enactment of rules allowing athletes to benefit from their name, image, and likeness in 2021, Bush initiated efforts to have his trophy restored. His advocacy gained momentum, with public support from various Heisman winners, including Johnny Manziel, Matt Leinart, and Tim Brown, who voiced their solidarity with Bush's cause.
Manziel reacted to Wednesday's news via social media, expressing his support.
